Our most exciting field trip is our living history lesson at Westville, Georgia. Students, parents, and teachers dress in costumes of the 1850’s. The students reenact an old-fashioned school day of recitation, song, recess activities, and the Virginia reel. The students step back in time and create treasured Westville Academy memories.
Social Studies presents the history of the United States chronologically, with a strong and consistent integration of geography, the humanities, citizenship, and economics. Reading selections feature contemporary classics and award winning fiction and non-fiction. English language instructional design includes strong motivation, integrates language arts, and teaches skills and practices. Math focuses on problem solving, number operations, and geometry concepts. Science education fosters curiosity and understanding. Spelling and handwriting skills are designed for review and expression. Religion, a developmental program, is based on Scripture and rooted in the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The fifth grade curriculum is enriched through exciting projects. One monthly book report even features a life-sized historical fiction friend book character.
Community involvement is important to fifth graders. Students collect canned goods, and clothing for Neighbors in Need. Mission money is raised in the fifth grade. Fifth graders purchase appropriate, new toys for ARC children. Before Christmas break, students enjoy a very special morning playing with ARC children. The students dress in their Westville costumes and perform songs for Morningside of Albany at Christmas.
