Our first and second grade classes have begun an exciting reading program entitled Open Court's Collections for Young Scholars. Learning activities within each unit are integrated through reading, writing, discussion, and exploration activities that incorporate ``hands-on" learning. A thorough and systematic phonics component is implemented daily to ensure successful knowledge of sound-letter association and decoding skills. This component includes not only written work, but also oral games, riddles, songs, puppet dialogues and stories that actively engage the students. Along with systematic phonics instruction, students participate daily in reading activities with authentic, high and quality literature in Big Books, trade books, mini-books, and student anthologies.
In math, first grade topics include numbers, number patterns, addition, subtraction, money, telling time, geometry, measurement and fractions. The students will also apply higher thinking skills in areas of problem solving and technology. Our math text, Math Advantage, correlates its lessons to the Georgia and national learning standards.
