Sixth Grade Program

Literature

Literature in the 6th Grade contains a variety of literature appropriate to the interests and needs of students, provides practice developing those skills necessary to appreciate and understand the literature, and relates literature to language, composition, and thinking skills.

It is expected that students will understand and recognize the differences and similarities among different types of literature (short stories, poems, novels, drama) and understand and recognize the basic types and characteristics of nonfiction.  Literature and English are combined in many of the activities that we will do during the year.

English

One of the main purposes of our study of English in the 6th Grade is to build a firm foundation not only for Language Arts in the student’s future but in all other areas as well.  We will review and continue to use functions that students have studied and learned in previous years and we will learn new functions this year that they have not studied.

We will focus on the mechanics of English, study the Writing Process and follow this procedure in their writing.  The two novels that were assigned over the summer will play an important part in their study and writing.  We will work on these novels in both English and Literature.

Math

Sixth grade math instruction will encompass a variety of skills leading up to the introduction of Pre-Algebra at the end of the course.  Students will practice basic math skills learned in previous years (such as operations with fractions, decimals, and percents) to help build proficiency.  They will also work on solving problems both concrete and abstract in nature.

Earth Science

Earth Science explores the Earth and its processes.  Earth Science will also include a focus on oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.

Social Studies

In 6th Grade Social Studies, students will study the Ancient World, New Ideas and New Empires, World Regions in Transition, Dawn of the Modern World, and A Century of Conflict.

Religion

In religion, the focus will be on faith and family.  The importance of the Bible and the stories of the Old Testament will be incorporated into the lessons.  The study of God’s chosen people and the events in ancient history will be highlighted.  Liturgical seasons will be studied at the appropriate time of the year and prayers learned.
