Academic Acheivement

St. Teresa’s graduates persist in lifelong goals, with a high percentage of St. Teresa's alumni earning college and post-graduate degrees including medicine, law, dentistry, education and other professional degrees.

St. Teresa's students consistently perform well above national averages, as demonstrated by our results on the 2007 Terra Nova standardized achievement tests.

The Terra Nova is a standardized achievement test that is used throughout the United States published by McGraw Hill.  It is important to note the important differences between achievement tests and performance tests when comparing schools:

Achievement tests, like the Terra Nova, compare the student’s performance with other students nationwide using nationally based standards.

For example, if a 3rd Grade student achieves the 99th percentile on a reading achievement test, it means that particular student reads better than 99% of all third graders nationwide.

Performance Tests, like the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) tests, determine the percentage of students who meet specific performance standards for each grade level. These are the tests mandated by the federal government in order for states to receive federal funding.

For example, if 99% of third grade students at a school pass the performance test for reading, it means that 99% of those students can read at the third grade level.

We believe the Terra Nova helps us to continuously improve our school and the education we offer.  The reports we receive from the Terra Nova allows us to:

  • Ensure our curriculum meets or exceeds nationally recognized standards
  • Determine if STS students are competitive with other students nationwide.
  • Improve our teaching methods, curriculum, and access the effectiveness of any interventions we implement
  • Challenge our students to be the best that they can be
  • Compare our students to those across the nation
  • Allow us to identify areas in need of improvement
