The Purpose

One only has to open the newspaper to see another article about childhood obesity, increase in Type II diabetes in children, lack of exercise and time outdoors. The Nun Run is one way we are trying to model good health habits for our children and encourage them to make healthy lifestyle choices and “get in the habit” of regular exercise. The event is one of many athletic activities at the school including soccer, basketball, cheerleading and new this year, a middle school swim team.

At the 2008 awards ceremony, as the winner of the Female Age 70 to 75 was announced, one student exclaimed “WOW, she’s 10 years older than my grandma, and my grandma can barely walk.” What better way is there to show the benefits of regular exercise – now and throughout their lives?

The original Nun Run was held to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of the School and to provide funds to bring retired sisters back for the festivities. This year, part of the proceeds will go to the retirement fund for the Sisters of the Adorers of the Most Precious Blood, the religious order who founded the school. The remainder of the proceeds will be used to support the projects of the St. Teresa’s School Parent Teacher Organization.

The race attracts runners from Georgia, Alabama and Florida and dozens of spectators. It is also a wonderful community event that would not be successful without the support and assistance of many community groups including the SOWEGA Striders, Albany Run/Walk, Albany Search & Rescue, Dougherty County Emergency Medical Services, the Albany Police Department, the Albany Area YMCA, St. Teresa’s Church Youth Ministry Program and the many volunteers who made the event possible.
